Profiles in Transformation

Livia Vanaver

“...it showed me how I
could touch somebody else
and really see something
ignite inside, some knowing,
some little transformation.”

In 2010, the Academy for the Love of Learning launched its Profiles in Transformation program to gather the stories of people, organizations and communities that have experienced positive transformation. Our intent is to provide examples of what we believe to be transformation, and thereby both help establish a clear baseline meaning of this word and provide inspirational stores of transformation at work. Eventually we hope to generate ongoing online dialogue about the nature of transformative learning, advancing our mission as an institute for transformative learning.

This discovery of one’s deepest longings, one’s inner voice, is at the heart of an educational methodology that has come to be known as "transformative learning.” This type of learning is at the center of all Academy programs, and rests on the premise that people are naturally endowed with gifts and talents, and that the education process must not block these gifts and talents, but draw them out, and help refine them. It is a natural movement towards a heightened quality of the soul, toward an enhanced sense of human dignity.

We are currently growing our Profiles project by collecting more stories from within and beyond the Academy community. We invite you to deepen your understanding of the methodology and power of transformative learning by reading these first Profiles in Transformation. We also invite you stay tuned as we add to the profiles, and find ways to initiate conversation about how people learn, unlearn, and transform.
